Talc Calcined 200# is a fine powder form of talc that has been calcined (heated) to remove water content and increase its whiteness and thermal stability. It does not develop a soapy film on glazes like raw talc. In ceramics, calcined talc is often used as a flux in clay bodies and glazes to improve properties like hardness, strength, and thermal resistance.
Applications in Ceramics:
- Clay Body Additive: Calcined talc is added to clay bodies, particularly in low-fire and mid-fire ceramics, to promote fluxing, which enhances the strength and durability of the fired product. It also helps control shrinkage and improves workability.
- Glaze Component: In glazes, talc contributes to the development of a smooth surface finish and can help create matte textures. It is also used to lower the thermal expansion coefficient, which helps in preventing crazing (the formation of fine cracks) in glazes.
- Refractory Properties: Talc is often included in ceramic formulations for products that require good resistance to thermal shock, such as kiln furniture and tiles.
Safety Considerations: While calcined talc is widely used in ceramics, care should be taken to avoid inhaling the fine dust. Adequate ventilation and protective equipment like masks are recommended during handling. In glazes intended for food contact surfaces, talc is generally considered safe when formulated correctly and fully vitrified. Our talc is tested and verified to be free of contamination with asbestos fibres.
