Chrome Oxide Green
Chrome Oxide Green
Chrome Oxide (Cr₂O₃) is a powerful green colorant widely used in ceramic glazes and stains. It produces a range of green hues, from bright lime green to deep olive tones, depending on the firing temperature, glaze composition, and atmosphere in the kiln (oxidation or reduction). Chrome oxide is very stable and does not volatilize easily, making it a reliable colorant even at high temperatures.
Role in Ceramics
- Colorant: Chrome oxide is primarily used as a green colorant in glazes. Its high stability ensures that the colour remains consistent across various firing conditions. It can also create pink or red hues when combined with tin oxide in certain glaze formulations.
- Opacity: At higher concentrations, chrome oxide can contribute to the opacity of the glaze, giving it a more matte appearance.
Safety Note
Chrome oxide should be handled with care, as inhaling fine dust particles can be hazardous. Protective equipment such as masks and gloves are recommended when working with this material.
