Bentonite Keramont

Keramont Bentonite (CA Weiss) is a specialized clay material widely used in ceramics for its unique properties. Bentonite, primarily composed of montmorillonite, has an exceptionally high swelling capacity and plasticity when mixed with water. This makes it valuable in ceramics as a binding agent and plasticizer, enhancing the workability of clay bodies.

In ceramics, Keramont Bentonite can be used to:

• Improve plasticity in clay bodies, making the clay easier to work with during forming processes like throwing and hand-building.
• Act as a suspension agent in glazes, helping to keep glaze components evenly distributed during application.
• Increase the strength of unfired clay bodies (greenware), reducing the likelihood of cracking or warping during drying and firing.
• Increase the strength and durability of unfired glazed making glazed pieces less susceptible to damage.

When added in small percentages (usually 2-5%) to ceramic bodies, bentonite can help improve the mechanical properties without affecting the final texture or appearance of the fired product. However, it should be used carefully, as too much bentonite can cause excessive shrinkage during drying and firing, leading to defects.

Safety Considerations: Like many fine particulate materials, bentonite can pose health risks if inhaled in dry, powdered form. Proper ventilation, dust masks, and other protective measures are recommended when handling it in dry conditions.
