Abbots L6 Frit
Abbots L6 Boron Frit is a ceramic material rich in boron oxide (B₂O₃), which is a key flux used in glazes, particularly in low-fire and mid-fire ceramics. Boron oxide helps lower the melting temperature of the glaze, promoting fluidity and enhancing the glaze's ability to bond with the clay body during firing. High boron frits are commonly used in glossy and transparent glazes, as well as in matte glazes when combined with other materials.
Role in Ceramics
- Flux: Boron oxide in high boron frits acts as a powerful flux, enabling glazes to melt at lower temperatures, which is ideal for earthenware and mid-fire stoneware. This makes high boron frits versatile for a wide range of ceramic applications.
- Stability: Boron frits contribute to the durability and chemical stability of the glaze. This makes them suitable for functional ware, especially when proper formulations ensure that the glaze is stable and safe for food contact surfaces.
Thermal Expansion
Abbots L6 boron frit has a lower thermal expansion coefficient compared to high alkali frits and the commonly-used Frit 3134. This means it can help reduce the risk of crazing by providing a better fit between the glaze and the clay body. By balancing boron oxide with other oxides like silica and alumina, potters can achieve a glaze with a more controlled thermal expansion, resulting in a stronger and more durable final product.
Safety Note
When using high boron frits, it's important to handle them with care, as inhaling fine particles can be harmful. Proper protective equipment, such as dust masks and adequate ventilation, should be used when handling these materials. Fired glazes that contain high boron frits should also be tested for leaching, particularly on food contact surfaces, as boron can influence the solubility of other glaze components.
